Table Runners using Flying Geese and HSTs

Time to learn a new technique!  Still a novice quilter, I decided to learn how to make flying geese.

I followed the excellent, clearly illustrated tutorial by Linda at Flourishing Palms.  Check it out at:

To create this table runner, I made 12 sets of 4 flying geese using the above recommended technique.

The next step was to arrange the flying geese and strips in the following arrangement to create square blocks.

I also made 2 blocks using the following layout.  You can see that I used HSTs to make the hourglass blocks.  Once assembled, I cut diagonally so that I had 4 triangular pieces to fill in the table runner.

Then I made another one using more green than white.  Which one do you like better?

Bargello Quilt

As a fairly new quilter, I saw a picture of a bargello quilt and became very intrigued.  With the encouragement of my quilting friends, I took on the challenge.  What do you think?

I started with two packages of 2 1/2" strips from the Northcott Sandscapes collection.

I added some lovely pine needles accent fabric (If I had it to do over, I'd probably use more strips of this accent fabric in the center of the bargello pattern).  This also served as a border and as cornerstones.

Then I found this complimentary golden border fabric.

Along with pillow shams made from the leftover fragments and a new bedskirt, my husband and I are both delighted with the end result.  Now to change the bedroom carpet.  Lol!!

Go ahead and give a bargello a ... GO ... !  You'll be glad you did!

A Shop Hop Adventure

A Shop Hop adventure was very helpful in teaching me more about quilting as I got more and more interested in my newest hobby.  These blocks were fun as well as informative about techniques!

Two of us spent 3 days in July of 2018 travelling around southwestern Ontario collecting our first Shop Hop samplers from 15 different quilting shops.  What a lovely few days together exploring so many fabulous fabric stores!

We combined our treasures and I got to do all the sewing.  I modified a few of the blocks to better suit our personal preferences.  Then I opted to use sashing to showcase the various blocks.   After having it quilted edge to edge by a local longarm quilter, we're thrilled with the finished product!

Gathering up the Fragments

Once I finished the quilts for 6 of my grandchildren, it was time to "gather the fragments" and create a string quilt with the leftovers for their parents.  What a pleasure to make this for our son and daughter-in-law!

I used pieces of fabric that were between 1" - 2" wide to make the 10 1/2" square blocks.  Two different widths of sashing created an appealing "Stained Glass" effect. A local longarm quilter did a great pantograph from edge to edge so that it was then ready for the binding.  It made for a wonderful surprise gift!

Happy quilting friends!!
