My sweet Mom travelled the dementia path. In 2018 I decided to make a sensory quilt to occupy her active hands. Here is the result:
Each square started as 4 1/2 " x 4 1/2 ". They are joined together with 1/4" seams, quilted to a soft blanket backing then bound with cotton fabric.
Square #1 Corduroy upholstery fabric has a great texture.
Square #2 I used 2 zippers opening in opposite directions and a nice piece of lace between.
Square #3 I made a 3 dimensional pinwheel
Square #5 The gentle noise of the crinkle-paper-filled shutters makes finding the lovely blue roses applique an appealing activity.
Square #6 Here I used a few layers of tulle and threaded a leather boot lace through random holes, pausing to add an interesting button about midway.
Square #7 Just some dice beads strung on some embroidery thread.
Square #8 This was made using 2 different widths of fabric which is gathered into a circle then anchored to the background fabric. A large textured button finishes it off.
Square #9 This belt buckle slides up & easily.
Square #10 Simply twisted some fabric strips before anchoring them at top & bottom.
Square #11 A large button and 4 hair elastics created this fun block. I double-stitched along the top to ensure that it could withstand a lot of yanking. Still in great condition after several years!
Square #12 These are simply some good sized beads that feel interesting to curious fingers.
Square #13 This shaggy soft fabric was a perfect addition.
Square #14 Some ribbon and small plastic o-rings created a source on endless fidgeting.
Square #15 Each of these triangles are filled with stuffing for a puffy texture.
Square #16 This is a piece of soft fleece from fabric I used to make a baby blanket.
The finished sensory quilt measured 16" x 16". A perfect lap size to provide hours of textural experience.
